A Night in Old San Antonio : A History in Photographs
Description:
The official Rain Rock hangs from the front porch of NIOSA's headquarters in the Gresser House, 227 S. Presa. This tradition dates back to the late 1970s, when chairman Joanna Parrish grew worried about the ominous clouds gathering prior to the festivities. NIOSA volunteer Sue Armitage reassured her that an old trick she had learned as a child at a West Texas ranch — hanging a rock with a hole in it on a fence — would ward off bad weather. That year, NIOSA raised the rain rock for the first time and enjoyed beautiful weather.
