A Photographic Guide to the Many Faces of Alamo Plaza
History:
The government razed the old, castle-like federal building and post office to make way for the current one in 1935. The construction, undertaken during the lean years of the Great Depression, met important needs of the time. It provided jobs, brought federal agencies together under a single roof, and modernized San Antonio's postal service, which took in over fifty-three million letters in 1936.

Built around a central light court and occupying an entire city block, the six-story limestone and granite building opened to the public in 1937. Tenants and customers alike praised the many modern innovations, including the first use of air conditioning in a post office in the United States.
