We gave two statements to the Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC) on Wednesday.  The first underlined the importance of preserving historic accessory structures in the Monte Vista Historic District.  Our second statement addressed infill housing proposed for the new Westfort Historic District, which lies between Broadway and Fort Sam.

Monte Vista’s early-20th century garages and former servants’ quarters often feature unique construction techniques, but are becoming increasingly rare in the neighborhood.  We share the neighborhood association’s concern that they be preserved whenever possible and not be allowed to deteriorate to the point where demolition becomes necessary.  Read our full statement in relation to the garage at 226 E. We continued to oppose a multi-structure infill housing project proposed for 255 Brahan in the Westfort Historic District due to the proposed increase in density. The landmark-eligible C. T. Boelhauwe House (below) once stood on this lot and was demolished in 2016.  Its loss inspired the residents of Westfort  to seek historic designation to better protect the character of their neighborhood.  HDRC denied the infill request for the second time since April, although the applicant may still return in June.
