Library Receives 2nd Humanities Texas Grant

Christmastime brought extra cheer with the San Antonio Conservation Society Foundation Library receiving a $9,600.00 Humanities Texas 2021 Relief Grant in December.  This funding came from over $2.3M  awarded to 263 cultural and educational non-profits in Texas.  Click here to see the full list of recipients (organized by city) – we’re in good company!

This is the second year that Humanities Texas has provided critical financial assistance that goes towards staffing our research library.

Thanks to this much needed support, the library continues to provide the public with assistance and access to materials that document San Antonio’s vibrant heritage and irreplaceable historic sites.  Researchers rely on us to support a variety of projects moving forward despite COVID.  Some of these include: National Register nominations for the Buick and the Friedrich Buildings, and a pending Travel Channel show on Victoria’s Black Swan Inn.

We are also collaborating on efforts to raise public awareness about underrepresented local history.  Although the Coalition for the Woolworth Building’s 2022 DreamWeek  event, “Piecing Together a Story of Courage: Civil Rights in San Antonio,” has been postponed, it’s worth waiting for.  The Coalition is making plans to offer this free event in March.   In the coming months, the library looks forward to helping public history students and professors at Texas A&M-San Antonio document local Green Book sites, and at St. Mary’s University by contributing digital content to the Westside Humanities Project.

Funding has been provided to the Foundation’s library from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021.
