Preserve the John Grumbles House – Update

The landmark designation case for the home of San Antonio Branch NAACP co-founder John Grumbles, at 1115 Wyoming Street, will not be heard at the  Nov. 3rd Historic and Design Review Commission meeting.

That’s good news because we’ve heard that the house has changed hands, and the new owner wants to preserve it.  We’re awaiting official confirmation from the Office of Historic Preservation that owner-supported landmark designation may now be possible.

This home was the residence of the late Mr. John Grumbles, a retired railway postal clerk.   He made several generous contributions to the San Antonio community by initiating, being a charter member of, and becoming the first president of the San Antonio Branch NAACP–chartered in 1918.  The Texas Historical Commission has since determined the property is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
