Historic and Design Review Commission – September 18, 2019
We commented on two projects under our new name, The Conservation Society of San Antonio. Watch for our new logo on future statements. This week’s statements focused on the Lavaca Historic District and a property within the RIO overlay for San Pedro Creek.
223 E. Carolina – Lavaca Historic District
This historic board-and-batten garage remains in good condition, but is too small for the current owner’s vehicles. We agreed with Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) staff that it shouldn’t be replaced with a shipping container/carport. The commissioners referred this case to the Design Review Committee to help the owner find a solution that doesn’t involve demolishing the original garage. Read our full statement.
915 S. Laredo – River Improvement Overlay District (RIO-7D)
RIO zoning applies to properties near the San Antonio River and also San Pedro Creek. Its goal is to enhance and protect the corridors along these waterways.
We joined with OHP staff in opposing the applicant’s request to remove this overlay zoning from a portion of the property to allow the installation of a large pole sign. The commission voted to deny the request. Read our full statement.
